As you are answering questions 1-6 from the virtual lab, these questions (that you don't have to write down anywhere) may help in your group discussion and understanding.  These discussions should make answering the questions from the lab easier :)

  • Define enzyme, substrate, product, active site, enzyme-substrate complex,
  • Describe how an enzyme works.
  • Describe the relationship between substrate amount and initial reaction rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction.
  • What happens to the initial reaction rate as substrate level increases? Is the initial reaction rate highest for the highest substrate amount?  
  • What is the maximum initial reaction rate for the enzyme at pH 7? At what substrate concentration is the maximum initial reaction at pH 7 reached?
  • Do all enzymes function best at same pH? Why or why not?
  • What other factors affect enzyme function?
  • How would you design an experiment to determine the optimal temperature for the enzyme you investigated in this virtual lab?

Go to the Campbell Biology Site and complete the thinking like a scientist activity in Chapter 5
"How is the rate of Enzyme Catalysis measured?"
Please e-mail the results to me, and also write them into your notebook on pg 25
Once that is complete, click here to go to an animation about enzymes and complete the quiz.  E-mail the results -- make sure that BOTH partners names are on the e-mail :)
