Watch the animations and complete the quizzes in the following links. You can work in pairs, just remember to include both names when you e-mail the results. You should have my e-mail memorized by now, if not, you should also have it written in your lab notebook.
I will print out your results for you to place into your notebook on pgs 28-29
Enzyme Action and the Hydrolysis of Sucrose
Feedback Inhibition of Biochemical Pathways
Food Pathogens and Temperature

additional info to help with pgs 26-27
As you are answering questions 1-6 from the virtual lab, these questions (that you don't have to write down anywhere) may help in your group discussion and understanding. These discussions should make answering the questions from the lab easier :)
there will be a clicker quiz the last half of class today

- Define enzyme, substrate, product, active site, enzyme-substrate complex,
- Describe how an enzyme works.
- Describe the relationship between substrate amount and initial reaction rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction.
- What happens to the initial reaction rate as substrate level increases? Is the initial reaction rate highest for the highest substrate amount?
- What is the maximum initial reaction rate for the enzyme at pH 7? At what substrate concentration is the maximum initial reaction at pH 7 reached?
- Do all enzymes function best at same pH? Why or why not?
- What other factors affect enzyme function?
- How would you design an experiment to determine the optimal temperature for the enzyme you investigated in this virtual lab?

pg 26 & 27 Virtual Enzyme Lab
Click here and follow the directions to complete the virtual enzyme lab.
On pg 26 you need
On pg 26 you need
- data
- graph(s)
- answers to analysis questions
pg 25 How is the rate of Enzyme Catalysis measured?
Go to the Campbell Biology Site and complete the thinking like a scientist activity in Chapter 5
"How is the rate of Enzyme Catalysis measured?"
Please e-mail the results to me, and also write them into your notebook on pg 25
Once that is complete, click here to go to an animation about enzymes and complete the quiz. E-mail the results -- make sure that BOTH partners names are on the e-mail :)
another helpful animation
yet another one -- scroll to the bottom of the page to mess with conditions and see what happens!
And one more ;) this one is a little longer, but still has some great info!

Notebook check
Notebook check today!! If you weren't here or didn't have your book, I need to see it tomorrow in order for you to receive a passing grade for progress reports (remember, grades are always fixable)

Enzyme lab cont
On Friday, please record last bits of data, and then clean up your experiment. Once it is cleaned up, please continue to work on Enzyme papers (up through pg 24)
Remember notebook check on Tuesday! :)

Design your own enzyme lab
What might affect the rate of reaction with the enzyme?
Design your own lab (use the lab rubric on page 200 to help) to test the reaction rate of an enzyme with gelatin.

1st week back
getting back into the swing of things.
Everyone should have a notebook and it should be set up
Below is the list of what should be on the first pages
